William Hession was a stone cutter and later a fireman on the Illinois Central Railroad, as well as a photographer and painter. He painted scenes far-flung from his native Louisville, Kentucky. He was a friend of Fontaine Talbot Fox III, famous for the "Toonerville Trolley" comic strip.

A collection of his photographs is held by the Earl K. Long Library, University of New Orleans.
