Stephen Alke was born in Augusta, Kentucky. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Frank Duveneck, Louis H. Meakin, Vincent Nowottny, and Henrietta Wilson. In 1912 he married Cincinnati artist Elizabeth Heil. They lived in New Richmond, Ohio, a short distance up the Ohio River from his birthplace.
