Clifton Karhu was a Minnesota native of Finnish ancestry who relocated to Japan and became, as the artelino auction site correctly puts it, “one of the most successful contemporary Western artists working in Japanese woodblock style.” Karhu was especially taken with the city of Kyoto, where he lived and worked, carving and printing his own woodcuts.
