Paul Sargent, an Illinois native, was one of the early painters in the artists’ colony of Brown County, Indiana. He received the encouragement of pioneer Brown County artist Adolph Shulz and became a charter member of the Brown County Artist Association in Nashville. He was a Hoosier Salon exhibitor for over 20 years.

Sargent was one of several Chicago-trained or -based impressionists who found Brown County a perfect site for landscapes. He began his art studies at Eastern Illinois State Normal School, eventually going to the Art Institute of Chicago school. Among his teachers were John Harlow, John Vanderpoel and Henry Stevens.

He lived in Chicago for several years after graduating from the Art Institute school in 1912 but returned to Illinois, where he established his home and studio in Charleston. He was a teacher at Eastern Illinois State College and gave private lessons.

In the 1920s he established a second home in California, painting in the Los Angeles area.
