Paul Sargent, an Illinois native, was one of the early
painters in the artists’ colony of Brown County, Indiana. He received the
encouragement of pioneer Brown County artist Adolph Shulz and became a
charter member of the Brown County Artist Association in Nashville. He was
a Hoosier Salon exhibitor for over 20 years.Sargent was one of several
Chicago-trained or -based impressionists who found Brown County a perfect
site for landscapes. He began his art studies at Eastern Illinois State
Normal School, eventually going to the Art Institute of Chicago school.
Among his teachers were John Harlow, John Vanderpoel and Henry Stevens.
He lived in Chicago for several years after graduating from the Art
Institute school in 1912 but returned to Illinois, where he established
his home and studio in Charleston. He was a teacher at Eastern Illinois
State College and gave private lessons.
In the 1920s he established a second home in California, painting in
the Los Angeles area.
