Brother of artist Frank Humpal, Art lived and painted in Brown County, Indiana.

We do not know when Art left his Hoosier home to paint the Western scene, top, but it evokes the WPA aesthetic of the 1930s. His Western landscapes, which are almost Disney-like in their palette, are rare. The untitled landscape, bottom, seems closer to home.

Art Humpal was found a few years back in a dilapidated cabin outside Nashville, Indiana, surrounded by hundreds of his canvases. A major show and sale of his work was held at the Brown County Art Gallery to help pay for a nursing-home stay. Humpal said he never really sought to sell his work because he resented paying gallery and dealer fees.
