-
- Brother of artist Frank Humpal, Art lived and painted in
Brown County, Indiana.
-
- We do not know when Art left his Hoosier
home to paint the Western scene, top, but it evokes the WPA aesthetic
of the 1930s. His Western landscapes, which are almost Disney-like
in their palette, are rare. The untitled landscape, bottom, seems
closer to home.
-
- Art Humpal was found a few years back in a dilapidated cabin
outside Nashville, Indiana, surrounded by hundreds of his canvases.
A major show and sale of his work was held at the Brown County
Art Gallery to help pay for a nursing-home stay. Humpal said
he never really sought to sell his work because he resented paying
gallery and dealer fees.
