Hutty was born in Michigan and moved in 1919 to Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked with Alice R. H. Smith and Anna Heywood Taylor. He was one of the founding members of the Charleston Etcher's Club and one of the leading lights of the Charleston Renaissance.
